A big thank you to everyone who came and visited or helped out with us at the Cultural Festival yesterday. I hope enjoyed getting a deeper insight into Japanese culture; kimono, yukuta, kendama, oni masks, koma and lots of great snacks! Below is some of the great pictures from yesterday. We look forward to seeing everyone again after reading week!

こんにちは !
I’m Usman and I’ll be the societies treasurer for the year. I’m responsible for controlling the finances of the society and ensuring the money we have is used appropriately throughout the year with your best interests in mind.
I’m a PhD student at the university studying Molecular Biology so I will likely be kept busy with my work so you may not see me as often as the other members. Nonetheless, I will also be helping the other committee members with their responsibilities when I can, and you should still see me around! – Don’t be afraid to say hi :D
I was originally drawn to Japan through traditional Japanese pop culture (ehem anime) and have been interested in Japanese culture ever since. I am still a novice when it comes to the Japanese language so hopefully I can also learn along with everyone else.
I’m looking forward to meeting new people with similar interests and I hope you all have a wonderful time in the society!
A big thank you to everyone who came to see us at our Welcome Week stall today. We received a great response to our Language-Culture survey, as well as to the society in general. We look forward to seeing everyone next week for our first session!

Hi everyone ^_^ I’m Louis and I’ll be your secretary again this year, albeit actually in person now!
My job is basically to do whatever Tom and Keita tell me to do, as well as acting as tech support for the society since I’m a Computer Science student. I also manage the Discord page so if you want anything added to it then drop me a message. My knowledge of Japanese is still very hit and miss but I’m always learning just like you will be soon.
I won’t lie, my interest in Japan started out with manga and anime, and I still really enjoy them both, but I’m also a big fan of Japan’s car and motorsport scene, so don’t be surprised if you see posts about it on here from me. I also love importing retro games from Japan, since there are so many incredible games that have been released that never made their way over here.
Last year was a very difficult year for the society, for
reasons I’m sure you’re all too familiar with, so let’s make this year the year
we bounce back stronger than ever!
I can’t wait to meet you all and hopefully as the year progresses,
we’ll be able to have some conversations in Japanese!
Hello everybody! I’m Tom and this year I’ll be serving as your new Vice-Chair.
My job as vice-chair is to assist the chair with the day-to-day running of the society, as well as to create and teach the language classes. Unlike previous years, I’m planning to take a more traditional approach to the language classes, with a heavy focus on grammar and comprehension. These classes won’t be easy, but if you can stick through with them, you’ll be well on your way to learning Japanese.
I’m also in charge of maintaining and running the blog that you’re reading this post on. I hope to upload regularly with articles on a wide range of topics. If you would like to contribute an article to the blog, please contact us here.
Personally, I’m mostly interested in the more
serious side of Japanese culture: history, literature, politics, etc. Although,
I still enjoy a good J-horror and mystery novel.
I look forward to working with everyone and good luck with
